On the basis of soil particles, soil has following main types gravel (more than 2mm ), sand (2−0.2mm), silt (0.02−0.002mm) and clay (less than 0.002mm. The water holding capacity of soil is inverse proportional to the size of their particles. Thus, clay soil has maximum water holding capacity, Sand soil has the least water holding capacity.
