Two qualities of tea are mixed in the ratio 4 : 1 and the mixture is sold at ₹ 72 per kg for a profit of 12.5%. If the tea of the second quality costs ₹ 3.25 more per kg than the tea of the first quality, what is the cost per kg of the tea of the first quality?

Solution:

(a) Let the price / kg of tea of 1st kind be ₹ x.
Then, price / kg of tea of 2nd kind = ₹ (x + 325)
Now, quantity of two tea be 4a and a, respectively.
Then, according to the question,
[4a × x + a × (x + 325)] x

= (4a + a) 72
49x + a (x + 3.25) =

{5a ×72×100} / 112.5

4x + x + 3.25 =

{5 ×72×100} / 112.5

5x +3.25 = 320
x =

{320-325}/5 316.75/5

=63.35
∴ Price per kg of tea of 1st kind = ₹ 63.35
