A group of workers was put on a job. From the second day onwards one worker was withdrawn each day. The work was finished when the last worker was withdrawn. If no worker was withdrawn at any stage, the group would have finished the job in two-thirds time. How many workers were there in the group?

(b) By options, the number of workers = 3
Then, time taken by them to finish the job when one worker is with drawn each day = 3
Then, time taken by them working together =

2/3

x 3 = 2 days
So, 3 workers can do the work in 2 days.
∴ Work done by 3 workers in 1 day =

1/2

Work done by 1 worker in 1 day =

1/{2×3}=1/6

Now, by given condition when one worker is with drawn

(1/6+1/6+1/6)↖{1\st \day}

(1/6+1/6)↖{2\nd \day}

(1/6)↖{3\rd \day}

= 1

{1+1+1+1+1+1}/6

= 1 ⇒

6/6

= 1
1 = 1, hence there were 3 workers
