Raja Harishchandra was the first silent film of India. It was directed and produced by Dadasaheb Phalke in 1913. The film was based on the legend of Raja Harishchandra, recounted in the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The silent film had inter-titles in Marathi and its cast and staff were primarily Marathi people.
