(A) The blue whale is a marine mammal up to 29.9 metres inlength and with a maximum recorded weight of 173 tons. It is the largest animal known to have ever existed. Blue whales are difficult to weigh because of their size. They were never weighed whole, but cut into blocks 0.5–0.6 meters across and weighed by parts.
