In a city, 40% of the adults are illiterate while 85% of the children are literate. If the ratio of the adults to that of the children is 2 : 3, then what per cent of the population is literate?

Validate

Solution:

Let the total population be 100.
∴ Number of adults =

2/5

× 100 = 40
and number of children = 60
Now, 60% of adults are literate
∴ Number of literate adults =

{60}/{100}

× 40 = 24
and number of literate children =

{85}/{100}

× 60 = 51
∴ Total number of literates = 24 + 51 = 75
∴ Required percentage =

{75}/{100}

× 100 = 75 %
