A train overtakes two persons who are walking in the same direction in which the train is moving at the rate of 2kmph and 4kmph and passes them completely in 9 and 10 seconds respectively. Then length of the train is

Solution:

Let the speed and length of train he v and d respectively. Then

{v-2=\;\;{d}/{9}.....(i)[∵;\text"Speed "\;=\;\;{\;\text"Distance"\;}/{\;\text"Time"\;}]

v-4=\;\;{d}/{10} ...(ii)

From Eqs (i) and (ii).

⇒{v-2}/{v-4}=10/9

⇒9v-18=10v-40

∴\;\;v=22

km/h
From Eqs. (i) and (ii), we get

(22-2)×5/18=d/9

20×5/2=d

∴d=50m

Hence, length of train = 50 m
