The average age of 46 students in a class is 15 years. Six of them whose average age is 12 years left the class and six of them whose average age is 18 years joined the class. What is the new average age of the class?

Solution:

Total age of 46 students = (46 × 15) years = 690 years
Total age of students who left = (6 × 12) years = 72 years
Total age of students who joined = (6 × 18) years = 108 years
∴ New average age of the class =

{690-(72+108)}/46

= 11 years approximately
