- It is a narrow, porous, northernmost stretch of Indo-Gangetic plain.

- Terai :-
- South of this belt, the streams and rivers re-emerge and create a wet, swampy and marshy region known as terai.
- Bhangar:-
- The part having an old alluvium deposit of the floodplain is known as Bhangar.
- It is the largest part of the northern plain and lie above the flood plains of the rivers and present a terrace like a feature.
- Bhangar area is less prone to flooding, are usually sandier and less fertile as well.
- Khadar:-
- The newer, younger alluvium deposits of the flood plains are called khadar.
- They are renewed almost every year and so are extremely fertile, thus, ideal for intensive agriculture.
