On the eve of 74th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the launch of Project Dolphin.

• Under the project, the initiatives will be taken to protect the dolphins found in rivers and oceans.
• Dolphins are considered one of the important indicators of the overall health of the water-based ecosystem.
• The ten-year-long project will give an impetus to the conservation efforts of the species by empowering various stakeholders.
• In India, Dolphins found in Ganga and Brahmaputra and its tributaries like Chambal, Son, Ghandak, Ghaghara, Kosi among others.
• The project will also aid the ongoing Namami Gange Mission, the mission to cleans Ganga river system.
• There are around 3700 Dolphins in the Indian river systems.
