Solution:

Single equivalent discount for consecutive discounts of x% and y%
=

(x+y-{xy}/{100})%

Illustration : Let the marked price of an article be Rs. 100.
Two consecutive discounts = 20% and 10%
Price after a discount of 20% = Rs. 80
Price after a discount of 10% =

{80×90}/{100}

= Rs. 72
Discount = Rs. (100 – 72)
= Rs. 28 i.e., 28%
By formula,
Single equivalent discount
=

(20+10-{20×10}/{100})%

= 28%
