The average weight of P, Q and R is 47 kg. If the average weight of P and Q be 32.5 kg and that of Q and R be 48.5 kg, then what is the weight of Q (in kg)?

Solution:

(2) Total weight of P, Q and R

= 4 7×3 =141

⇒ P + Q + R =141 ...(i)
Total weight of P and Q

= 3 2 .5× 2 = 6 5

kg
⇒ P + Q =65 ... (ii)
Total weight of Q and R

= 4 8 .5 × 2 = 9 7

kg
⇒ Q + R = 97 ...(iii)
From Eqs. (i) and (iii),
P + 97 = 141
⇒ P = 141 - 97
∴ P = 44
Putting the value of P in Eq. (ii),
⇒ 44 + Q = 65
⇒ Q = 65 - 44
∴ Q =21 kg
