Among three numbers, the first is twice the second and thrice the third. If the average of three numbers is 429, then what is the difference between the first and the third number?

Solution:

Let the first number be

6x

⇒ Second number =

3x

and third number =

2x

⇒ Average =

{6x+3x+2x}/3=429

⇒

11x = 429 × 3 = 1287

⇒

x=1287/11=117

∴ difference between first and third number =

6x − 2x = 4x

4 × 117 = 468
