If x: y = 3 : 5 and x-y = - 2, then the value of x + y is

Solution:

Given = x: y = 3 : 5 and x-y = - 2
Let x = 3a and y = 5a
⇒ 3a − 5a = −2a = −2
⇒

a = {-2}/{-2} =1

∴ x + y = 3a + 5a = 8a = 8 × 1 = 8
