The following table shows the number of children in each house of a society.

What is the average number of children per house?

Solution:

Total number of houses = 6 + 17 + 17 + 3 = 43
Total children =

(0×6)+(1×17)

+(2×17)+(3×3)

= 17 + 34 + 9 = 60
∴ Average number of children per house =

60/43=1.4
