(b) Satara was the first victim of Lord Dalhousie’s ‘policy of doctrine of lapse’. Doctrine of lapse was the policy of Dalhousie, the Governor General of India. This doctrine was based on the idea that in case a ruler of a dependent state died childless, the right of ruling over the State reverted or ‘lapsed’ to the sovereign. The Satara (1848),Jaitpur and Sambalpur (1849),Nagpur and Jhansi (1854), Tore and Arcot (1855) and other princely states have been annexed under the policy of Doctrine of Lapse.
