Khyal or Khayal is the modern genre of classical singing in North India. It is thought to have developed out of Dhrupad introducing frequent taans and alankars in it. Khyal was popularised by Niyamat Khan and his nephew Firoz Khan, both musicians in the court of Muhammad Shah Rangile (1719- 1748). In Hindustani music, a gharana is a system of social organisation linking the musicians or dancers by lineage or apprenticeship, and by adherence to a particular musical style. It typically refers to the place where the musical ideology originated; for example, some of the gharanas well known for singing khayals are: Agra, Gwalior, Indore, Jaipur, Kirana and Patiala.
