After the general elections, the protem speaker is the senior most member of the Lok Sabha. After the formation of a new government post general elections, a list of senior Lok Sabha members prepared by the Legislative Section is submitted to the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, who selects a protem speaker. The appointment has to be approved by the President. ‘Protem’ is a Latin phrase which best translates to ‘for the time being’ in English.
