The Right to Education was added to the Fundamental Rights in the Constitution of India through the Constitution (86th Amendment) Act, 2002. The 86th Amendment in December 2002 inserted a new Article 21A which says that 'the State shall provide free and compulsory education to all children of the age of six to fourteen years in such manner as the State may, by law, determine'.
