Yama, Indra, Varuna and Kubera are known as the Lokapalas or the Guardians of the Universe. There are total eight lokapalas, the remaining four being Agni, Pavana, Soma and Surya. They are also called the Guardians of the Directions and each one is associated with a particular cardinal point on the compass.
