Chhau dance is the most important dance of the Jharkhand. The origin of this dance was Saraikela (Jharkhand) and from here this dance spread to Mayurbhanj (Odisha) and Purulia (West Bengal). The first exhibition of this dance in a foreign country was held through the efforts of Sudhendu Narayan Singh (the prince of Saraikela) in 1938. After independence, the government of Bihar patronized and promoted this dance all over the world. After the formation of Jharkhand state, it is being patronized by the Jharkhand government. In this dance, the dancers wear the masks of different varieties and enact the mythical and ancient stories. In this dance, the presence of the guru/trainer is compulsory.
