Consider the circuit shown below where all resistors are of 1 kΩ

If a current o f magnitude 1 mA flows through the resistor marked X, what is the potential difference measured between points P and Q?

Solution:

R = 1kΩ, i = 1mA = 1 × 10

^{–3}

i ={i_1 ×R}/{3R}=i_1/3

∴ i_1 = 3i

i_1 = i_2 ×3/8

i_2=8/3\ i_1

⇒

8/3×3i=8i

i_2 = i_3 ×8/21

i_3 =21/8\;i_1=21/8×8i=21i

V_p - V_Q = i_3 ×[R+{13R}/21]

⇒

21i ×{34R}/21

⇒

34 iR

⇒

34 × 1 × 10^{–3} × 1 × 10^3 = 34
