In three vessels, each of 100 L capacity, mixture of milk and water is filled. The ratios of milk and water are 4 : 1, 2 : 3, 4 : 3 in the respective vessels. If all the three vessels are emptied into a single large vessel, then what will be the ratio of water to milk in the resultant mixture ?

Solution:

(e) Amount o f water in 1st vessel =

1/5

x 100 = 20 L
∴ Amount of milk in 1st vessel =

4/5

x 100 = 80 L
Similarly, amount of water in 2nd vessel =

3/5

x 100 = 60 L
Amount of milk in 2nd vessel =

2/5

x 100 = 40 L
Amount of water in 3rd vessel =

3/7×100=300/7

Amount of milk in 3rd vessel =

4/7×100=400/7

∴ Required ratio =

{20+60+300/7}/{80+40+400/7}

{{140+420+300}/7}/{{560+280+400}/7}

860/1240=43/62
