Two articles are sold for Rs. 10,384 each. On one, the seller gains 18% and on the other, he loses 12%, What is his overall gain or loss?

Solution:

Selling price of two articles = 2 × 10384 = Rs. 20768
Cost price of first article =

100/118 × 10384

= Rs. 8800
Cost price of second article

= 100/88× 10384

= Rs. 11800
Total cost price = Rs. (8800 + 11800) = 20600
Gain = 20768 - 20600 = Rs. 168
